VAT Calculator
Value Added Tax, known as IVA in Spain, Italy and Portugal and TVA in France, is built into most prices in the UK and Europe. This VAT calculator adds VAT to a price without tax, or takes it out of a price that already includes it, and shows the net amount, the VAT and the total. Pick a country to fill in its standard 2026 rate, or type any rate yourself, so it also works for GST and other sales taxes.
Please enter valid values.
How to Use the VAT Calculator
- Enter the amount and choose its currency.
- Choose a country to fill in its standard VAT rate, or type your own rate.
- Choose whether to add VAT to a price without VAT, or remove VAT from a price that already includes it.
- Select Calculate to see the net price, the VAT and the total.
VAT Calculator Formula Explained
To add VAT, the tax equals the net price multiplied by the rate divided by 100, and the gross price is the net price plus the tax. To remove VAT from a gross price, divide it by 1 plus the rate divided by 100 to get the net price; the tax is what is left over. The reverse formula is what you need when you only know the price on the receipt and want to see how much of it is VAT. Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent, and the net price and VAT always add up to the total shown.
VAT Calculator Example
On a net price of €100 with 21% VAT, which is the standard rate in Spain and the Netherlands, the VAT is €21.00 and the total is €121.00. In the UK, a receipt for £120.00 that includes 20% VAT breaks down into £100.00 before VAT and £20.00 of VAT, because £120.00 divided by 1.2 is £100.00.
When to use this tool
Use it to price a product for sale, check an invoice, work out how much VAT you can claim back on an expense, or see what a receipt cost before tax. Because you can type any rate, it also works for GST and other sales taxes outside Europe.

Good to know
VAT rates and reduced categories are set by each country within the EU framework, so apply the rate that matches where the goods or services are supplied and what they are. This calculator gives an estimate for everyday use and is not tax advice. Check the latest rates with your national tax authority before filing a return.
VAT Calculator — FAQs
How do I calculate VAT?
To add VAT, multiply the price without VAT by the rate divided by 100 and add the result to the price. To remove VAT from a price that already includes it, divide the total by 1 plus the rate divided by 100. At 20%, that means dividing by 1.2, and the difference between the two figures is the VAT.
What is the difference between VAT, IVA, TVA and GST?
They are the same kind of tax with different names. VAT is the English name, IVA is used in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, and TVA in French and Romanian. GST is the name used in countries such as India, Canada and Australia. The maths is identical, so you only need to enter the correct rate.
What is the standard VAT rate in the UK and Europe?
The UK standard rate is 20%, with a reduced rate of 5% and a zero rate of 0% for some goods and services. In the EU, every country sets its own standard rate, which cannot be less than 15%. Rates range from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary, and the table on this page lists each country.
Should I use the standard or a reduced rate?
The standard rate applies to most goods and services. Reduced, zero or exempt treatment applies only to specific categories, such as some food, books, domestic energy or passenger transport, and the list differs by country. If you are not sure which rate applies, check with your national tax authority.
Is this calculator suitable for filing a VAT return?
It is a helper for everyday calculations such as pricing, invoices and expense checks, not a substitute for accounting software. Official returns can require specific rounding rules, for example per invoice line or per invoice, so follow your tax authority's guidance.
Can I use it for several rates on one invoice?
This tool handles one rate at a time. Calculate each line at its own rate, then add the VAT amounts together.
